Barry McGuigan Rallies The Troops For August 12th Boxers Football Tournament

There are few men in the sport of boxing more respected than Barry McGuigan – Rightly so as the former British, European and WBA Featherweight World Champion is a true legend in his own life time.

During his relatively short eight year pro career Barry fought some thirty eight times, nine of which were title fights. Now a successful manager, promoter, boxing writer and pundit Barry’s life seems just a busy as it was back in the 1980’s, yet the man known in his fighting days as ‘The Clones Cyclone’ still found the time to talk about the upcoming 3rd Annual TRAD TKO Boxers and Celebrities Charity Football Tournament, in aid of the Indee Rose Trust, that takes place on Sunday the 12th August.

“First of all I think it’s a magnanimous and generous of Johnny (TRAD TKO Supremo Johnny Eames) to organise this event every year, especially in the light of he has been suffering from cancer himself for the past year or so, just goes to show his personal determination and generosity.

The Indee Rose tournament, as an event, is simply the biggest coming together of boxers that I know of, it’s a brilliant idea. It’s a great event, it’s very competitive yet it’s a great day out for everyone.

The great thing about boxing is you can come up to the guys, they’re very humble and always happy to give their time as well, they’re very special people.

Even those that have big fights coming up, they may not play but they still turn up to show their support and meet the fans, it’s lovely you know.

The generosity and humility in boxing always sets it apart from other sports, it’s a dangerous sport, a great sport and paradoxically Boxers are probably the most generous people in sport.

Last year the event raised over £20,000 for the Indee Rose Trust, which went to help bring some joy to the kids, who are suffering from brain and spinal tumours, with their wonderful care packages.

I know Johnny and all the boxers that take part will want to do even better this year.”

This year’s TRAD TKO Boxing Gym organised Boxers and Celebrities Football Tournament, in aid of the Indee Rose Trust, kicks off at 12:00pm at the Concord Rangers FC, Thames Road, Canvey Island, Essex on Sunday 12th August 2012.

Sanchez vs. Gaines, Reyes vs. Suleymanov in Mexico

by on Jul.31, 2012, under Buzz

Sanchez vs. Gaines, Reyes vs. Suleymanov in Mexico

On Saturday August 4 in Mazatlan, Mexico, promoter Hector Garcia will present two World Boxing Federation World title fights, as Women’s Flyweight champion Irma Sanchez defends against American Sharon Gaines and Arturo Santos Reyes squares off with Khabir Suleymanov for the vacant Super Bantamweight crown.

24-year-old Irma Sanchez, 23-5-1 (7), will be making the third defense of her world title, which she won in July 2011 against Panamanian Carlota Sanchez and since defended with a decision over fellow Mexican Susana Cruz Perez and a second round stoppage over Thailand’s Fahpratan Looksaikongdin.

In her last outing, this past June, “La Guerita”, which translates to “The White Girl”, won a ten round decision over former world champion Ibeth Zamora Silva in a non-title bout, and she is now ready to continue her reign as one of the most active world champions in the game, and should get a stern challenge from the experienced Sharon Gaines, 11-13-1 (3).

“I know what I will be up against with Sharon Gaines. It will be a war, but I think I will knock her out. It’s going to be fireworks”, said a confident Irma Sanchez.

A 2008 Mexican Olympian, Arturo Santos Reyes, 11-2 (4), proved his world class level in the professionals when he lost a very close and controversial split decision to five-time world champion Fernando Montiel in June that many observers felt he deserved to win.

Having captured a couple of regional championships earlier in his career, he is now ready for his first crack at a world title, the WBF Super Bantamweight version, and is not discouraged by the Montiel-setback:

“I beat Montiel, no matter what the judges scored, and the fans are not easily fooled. I clearly connected with more shots, and his face was a mess while mine was unharmed”, said Santos Reyes.

His opponent in Mazatlan will also be entering his first world championship fight, but while Los Angeles-based, Russian-born Khabir Suleymanov, 13-2 (6), had his first twelve professional bouts in America, he will not be unfamiliar with fighting in Reyes home country. In fact, his last three outings took place in Mexico!

The Sanchez vs. Gaines / Reyes vs. Suleymanov WBF world championship double-header on Saturday August 4 promoted by HG Boxing at the Centro de Convenciones in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico will be televised live by Televisa.

Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa Back In Action August 12th – Swaps Boxing Gloves For Football Boots

One of the sport of Boxing’s true characters, former British and European Bantamweight Champion, Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa is the latest star to sign up for the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym organised 3rd Annual Boxers & Celebrities Charity Football Tournament, which takes place at the Concord Rangers FC stadium in Canvey Island on Sunday 12th August.

During his magnificent thirteen year pro career Ian fought in no less than fifteen Championship bouts and virtually dominated the domestic and European scene between June 2007, after beating Jason Booth to become British Champ, and March 2009, when he lost the coveted European crown to Malik Bouziane.

That wasn’t the end of his Championship career though, as in October 2009 Ian successfully regained the British title, with a close victory over Gary Davies. He then went on to unsuccessfully defend his crown, and challenge for the vacant Commonwealth strap against Jamie McDonnell.

Ian had one final shot at Championship glory in June 2010, when he faced Stuey Hall for the British title vacated by Jamie McDonnell. Unfortunately Ian was forced to retire in the corner in the eighth, after suffering from heat exhaustion.

Ian had just one more fight, at Super Bantamweight against Martin Ward, before calling it a day. Today Ian is still involved in the sport, happily giving his time mentoring and coaching youngsters in East London.

Following his giving a pads session to English Light Middleweight Champion Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng, at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Ian spoke briefly on his upcoming Indee Rose tournament debut, “Yeah, I’m taking part in the Indee Rose Football Tournament this year, it’s all for a really good cause.

It’s something that I really want to do, I get to play football, meet up with all the boxers again and spend time with the fans. Most importantly though we will raise a lot a money for kids who are suffering from brain and spinal tumours.

I’m not sure which team I’m in yet, or been allocated a position whatsoever, but it doesn’t matter as I’ll play anywhere, winger, forward, whatever. Although don’t expect me to get any headers.

It’s gonna be a great day for everyone, can’t wait.”

Kopylenko WBF World Champ, Akhundov Retains

by on Jul.16, 2012, under Buzz

Kopylenko WBF World Champ, Akhundov Retains

Ukrainian stars Vitaliy Kopylenko and Timur Akhundov delighted their fans on Saturday night at the Club Sportlife in Kiev, putting on impressive performances in World Boxing Federation title fights. Kopylenko won the vacant World Middleweight title, while Akhundov retained his Intercontinental Featherweight crown.

Undefeated Kopylenko dominated Portuguese Champion Vitor Sa with excellent boxing, and never let his experienced opponent into the bout. In the first two rounds he kept Sa at bay and delivered his own shots with accuracy and determination, and in the third he went for the finish and delivered a perfect left hook to the liver that send Sa to the canvas for the full count.

It was a magnificent display of skills and power from Kopylenko, who joins Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko as Ukraine’s only reigning world champions and improved his record to 18-0 (9). Sa, who had lost on points in two previous world title challenges, returns to Portugal with a 27-8 (5) ledger.

Timur Akhundov made a successful first defense of his WBF Intercontinental Featherweight title with a clear, but competitive, unanimous decision over game French challenger Leonus Marie Francoise. Akhundov boxed well from the outside as well as on the inside and mostly controlled the action, but Francoise always tried to get the upper hand and made it and entertaining affair.

Akhundov was clearly the better technician of the two, and fought a smart fight from the start. Francoise didn’t have the tools to seriously threaten the champion, but he never looked like a man resigned to just going the distance. However, in the tenth round it did look like Akhundov would finish him as the Ukrainian floored Francoise with a beautiful body-shot, but Francoise beat the count and eventually made it to the final bell.

Judges Jean Marcel Nartz, Olena Pobyvailo and Oleg Kuderov scored the bout 117-110, 116-111 and 119-108 respectively. Akhundov, who could be in line to fight for the WBF World title in the near future, is now 14-2-1 (5) in the professional ranks, while Francoise dropped to 8-7-1 (2).

The show was promoted by Oleg Bruskov, who for the second time this year put on a great WBF title double-header.

Boxing Stars Lace Up Boots For 3rd Annual TRAD TKO Charity Football Tournament On August 12th

Boxing Stars Lace Up Boots For 3rd Annual TRAD TKO Charity Football Tournament On August 12th

For the past couple of years around this time TRAD TKO Boxing Gym supremo Johnny Eames has taken a break, from the business of Boxing, to head up the team that organises the annual Boxers and Celebrities Charity Football Tournament, to raise much needed funding for the Indee Rose Trust, which provides support and care packages for youngsters suffering from brain and spinal tumours.

This year is no different, as earlier today Johnny announced the date and location for this year’s extravaganza – Sunday, 12th August at the Concord Rangers Football Club on Canvey Island, Essex.

For those of you that have yet to attend one of these excellent tournaments, boy have you missed out on a great day out, as well as the chance to watch some of the sport’s biggest stars in action.

The list of those that have taken part in previous events, many of whom will again be at Canvey Island on the 12th August, is a veritable who’s who of British Boxing, Music and Television.

Boxing luminaries, such as David Haye, Ricky Hatton, Nathan Cleverly Matthew Macklin, Kevin Mitchell, Ricky Burns, Barry McGuigan, Paul and Stephen Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, Willie Limond, Rendall Munroe, Anthony Crolla, Graham Earl, Tony Oakey, Wayne Elcock, Ross Minter, Martin Power etc. have previously taken part, of which many will again be in action on the 12th August and joined by celebrities such as Alex Reid, Johnny Borrell (Razorlight), Iron Maiden, Mark Wingett (Jim Carver – The Bill), Stephen Bell (Coronation Street), various of the Eastenders and Shameless cast etc.

These special events have proved a huge hit with the fans, with both the previous events raising in excess of £20,000 for this exceptionally worthwhile cause. A figure that Johnny, as well as the Boxers and Celebrities already signed up for this year’s event, will be determined to better.

On making the announcement Johnny, who last year himself underwent treatment for Cancer, said, “Yeah, this year sees the third annual TRAD TKO Charity football tournament, in aid of the Indee Rose Trust. Which, for those that don’t know, has boxers and celebrities taking part and raising money for children with brain and spinal tumors.

It’s a great cause, we’ve had a great response from the boxing community, as well as from celebrities from music and TV, for the first two years and this years been no different.

In fact this year’s been crazy, even though we haven’t press released it yet because we’ve been busy with other things, yet the phone hasn’t stopped, everyone, celebrities and boxers, want to take part.

The past couple of years we’ve had a proper who’s who of boxing turn out, the likes of David Haye, Ricky Hatton, Nathan Cleverly, Ricky Burns, Rendall Munroe, Kevin Mitchell, Billy Joe Saunders, Paul Smith, just to name a few, but the list is endless and if I’ve not mentioned you, I don’t mean nothing by it, there are so many of you that come and turn out for it and we really appreciate that you do.

Last year’s was fantastic, we raised over twenty grand again, which far exceeded anything we expected as we put it together over a three week period due to my treatment. But that’s made me more determined to raise even more this year really.

This year we’ve got Joe Gallagher bring his team down again, which I’m sure will have more players than it did last year. Billy Nelson’s bringing a Scottish team down, Nathan Cleverly’s bringing his own team down from Wales, full of Welsh fighters and celebrities. It’s a real four nations as we’ve also got Alio bringing the Irish boys over again.

Paul Smith and the scousers, who won the first year, will be back. Paul who like me is a patron of the Indee Rose Trust and does great work up in Liverpool for the kids – he likes to keep it low profile but we’re watching and know what great work you’re doing, it’s fantastic what you do kid.

It’s just a great cause and if you haven’t been before, you really should get yourself along there on the 12th August, it’ll be at Concord Rangers Football Club on Canvey Island.

Keep a check on the TKO website, my facebook page and for press releases to learn more about who’ll be there as well as tickets and stuff.

Look forward to seeing you all there.”

Three New Aces For The WBF

As the new season fast approaches, not just the world’s famous football clubs are busy announcing new signings of star players, also the World Boxing Federation is adding some further big names to their high-quality staff that are sure to add value to the organization, which is on the fast-track to becoming a major player on the world scene.

Germany’s Dominik Junge (45) inherits the currently vacant position of Women’s Boxing Chairman with immediate effect. “We’ve had on-going discussions with Dominik since almost half a year,” says WBF Vice President Jean Marcel Nartz, “and we are proud he is now joining our team, because in female boxing he is a known quantity sure to add further impetus to the WBF.”

After finishing his own successful Kick- and Thaiboxing career in 1993, Junge not just concentrated on his flourishing IT business, but started out to develop training systems and marketing strategies for female boxers and working as cutman in countless female title fights. Due to this, he gained relations from his home base of Karlsruhe in womens boxing worldwide, which he will now put to use for the WBF.

“Professionalism and passion is what results in success,” explains Junge, who since 2008 worked for the Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF), before now making his move to the World Boxing Federation. Such is his status in Germany, that he is a regular guest on TV and radio programs as well as source of comment for newspapers and magazines when it comes to female boxing.

50-year-old Bill Calogero of upstate New York is coming on board the WBF as the American East Coast Representative. He has been involved in professional boxing for the past 26 years as a promoter, manager, adviser, writer and historian. For the past nine years, Calogero is also the host of the ‘Talkin’ Boxing With Billy C’ show, which is on TV, radio and the internet and the only daily two-hour boxing talk show on the planet. His first book will be out in November on bareknuckle great Tom Molineaux.

“I have contacts in every area of the sport and working for the WBF will be a new challenge to me with the focus on assisting in developing the WBF to be regarded as a major sanctioning body,” said Calogero, and further explains: “I believe the time is right for the WBF, especially how most fans perceive the current major players.”

Last but not least, Iranian sports manager Behnam Azampanah will try to introduce the WBF in the Middle East as the Regional Representative for that aera. The 34-year-old Teheran resident is a former one-time Iranian amateur boxing champion, but has made himself a name on an international level in different martial arts.

Leon Williams: Friendship’s On Hold Until After Saturday’s Title Fight

Leon Williams: Friendship’s On Hold Until After Saturday’s Title Fight

Whilst all the recent media focus has been on next week’s highly controversial Heavyweight clash, between David Haye and Dereck Chisora, another, and probably far more significant, Clash of the Titans takes place this coming Saturday, with the long awaited showdown, between former British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams and current Southern Area Champ Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest, taking place at York Hall in Bethnal Green.

After three false starts, each due to injury, this most defining of domestic Cruiserweight battles will also decide, for once and for all, just who is the Capital’s true #1 of the division as well as, along the line, earn the winner a shot at the coveted Lonsdale Belt.

The early betting seems to be heavily in favour of Streatham’s Former Champ Williams. No surprise really, as when the pair met as Amateurs, Romford’s Conquest was knocked out in just 45 seconds of the first round!

Earlier today, following his final training session at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Leon Williams spoke briefly on the upcoming battle with his old foe and good friend Tony Conquest, “We’re really good friends but that’s on hold until after the fight, during the fight it’s purely business.

The plan is to just get my rounds in, punch hard and keep pressuring him and get the win, then say sorry afterwards and I’ll be the first to buy him a drink.

Then I want a shot at getting back my British title. That’s the main goal and that’s where my motivation for this fight is coming from. If it wasn’t a stepping stone to get the Lonsdale belt back where it belongs, with me, I probably wouldn’t have taken the fight.

The Southern Area title isn’t really what I want to fight for, I’m not devaluing the title at all, it’s a very worthwhile title, just me and my team feel it is a backward step as I was British Champ earlier this year.

I will get back there, but first I have to win this fight, and I will win this fight. We train hard at the TRAD TKO, me, Johnny (Manager/Coach Johnny Eames) and Barry (co-trainer Barry Smith) and we will get back to where we were, and I will get my British title back.”

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest for the Southern Area Cruiserweight title co-headlines Olivia Goodwin’s ‘One More Round’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 7th July 2012.

There are limited tickets, priced £60 (Ringside) and £35 (Standard Seated), still available, for Leon Williams vs. Tony Conquest, on-line now at www.tkoboxoffice.com – tickets are also be available direct from Leon Williams or the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA.
